Holiday Retirement (HR): How long have you been a chef? How many of those years have been at Holiday?
Chef Jeff: Twenty years total – seven years with Holiday. I’ve been on the road most of that time. I was a community chef for six months and took on a regional position after that.
HR: When did you know you wanted to pursue culinary arts as a career?
Chef Jeff: My father was a working chef, so I’ve been around food as far back as I can remember. I knew early on that this is what I wanted to do.
HR: What’s your favorite part about your role at Holiday?
Chef Jeff: In my current position, I get to mentor new chefs and inspire them, which is great. I love getting to watch them grow and make an impact on residents’ lives.
HR: Do you have a favorite Holiday memory?
Chef Jeff: Definitely my first Thanksgiving as a Holiday chef. I was new to Holiday and didn’t really know how the company worked. I was amazed by how thankful the residents were. I felt like they invited me into their home and let me cook their Thanksgiving meal, which for many people is their most memorable of the whole year. I felt honored. It’s what convinced me that I needed to stay with Holiday.
HR: Do you have any favorite recipes you’d like to share?
Chef Jeff: Yeah! A Charleston Hummingbird Cake.
HR: We hope it’s not made of hummingbirds!
Chef Jeff: [laughs] No. It’s a favorite here in Charleston. The residents love it.
