Edgewood Downs resident dances into her 100th year
On July 18, 2014, Alice Sumida, a resident of Edgewood Downs, celebrated a momentous milestone: her 100th birthday. A skilled and elegant ballroom dancer since discovering a passion for the art in her eighties, Alice continues to be an international champ on the dance floor.
Surrounded by family, friends, and the Edgewood Downs community, Alice beamed with delight as she rung in her 100th birthday, said Kathy Montgomery, enrichment coordinator at the independent senior living community. It was a wonderful day filled with laughter, celebration, 100 cupcakes, and a champagne toast.
While life might be a sweet dance for Alice, she is no stranger to adversity. In fact, she and her husband, who come from Japanese descent, were ordered to work in the sugar beet fields of eastern Oregon following the Pearl Harbor attacks. Now, Alice's luster for life and dance makes each and every day special.
Happy birthday, Alice! Cheers to you.
