Forest Pines resident is constantly moving, has the stories to prove it
When Forest Pines residents gather to tell stories of the places they have traveled and people they have met, 99-year-old Arlene M. is never short of material to share. The former fashion designer has traveled all over the world and met some of history’s most fascinating figures along the way.
Arlene has lived in a number of places around the United States, including Tampa, Florida, and New York City. While living in Tampa, Arlene carpooled with baseball legend Jackie Robinson when he would head home after spring training each day. After moving to New York, she met Sydney Poitier while managing a bakery on 7th Avenue. She even recalls dancing the twist with the former mayor of New York, John Lindsay, at a party.
As if her encounters with the famous and influential were not enough, Arlene has traveled across the world seeking adventure. Her goal is to travel to a new place every year, and so far she has accomplished this each year to date.
Since moving into Forest Pines in Columbia, South Carolina, her busy lifestyle has only continued. Staying true to her roots, Arlene continues to sew in her free time. The woman who used to coordinate volunteer fashion shows in New York still donates her time and talents, currently volunteering for multiple organizations to keep herself busy.
Arlene’s secret to longevity is a simple one: “Keep yourself moving and never sit for too long.” Whether swimming almost every day, teaching tai chi, or catching up with her numerous grandchildren, Arlene has taken this advice to heart.
Less than four months away from turning 100 and joining a unique group of centenarians at Holiday Retirement communities, the adventurous and generous spirit of this Forest Pines resident shows no sign of slowing.
