Atrium at Gainesville resident regains her confidence, mobility with water therapy
When Dot Delk arrived at Holiday Retirement’s Atrium at Gainesville
in 2014, she was in a wheelchair. Dot had just beaten cancer, and it had taken a big toll on her health. That was before water therapy brought her out of her shell—and out of her chair.
When Dot discovered water therapy classes in the pool at the Florida senior living community, she had no idea how much it would improve her health. But Dot learned quickly, progressing from water therapy classes to water walking, and eventually leaving her wheelchair behind. Today, Dot is losing weight, getting stronger, and sharing her positive energy with the community.

“I just can’t help sharing my love for water therapy,” said Dot. “Now we’ve got a group of at least 10 people walking in the pool together every morning. Everyone is welcome, and it’s more than an exercise group. They’ve become some of my closest friends.”
And it’s not just Dot who is reaping the benefits of water therapy; it’s done wonders for other seniors, too. According to the Mayo Clinic, aquatic exercises
improve heart health, reduce stress and improve muscular endurance and strength. Because water walking is a low-impact activity that takes the pressure off bones and joints, it’s a great exercise for seniors.
“It’s been so great to see Dot’s health and happiness improve since she started water walking, along with everyone in the group,” said Annina Jest, enrichment coordinator at Atrium at Gainesville. “When they’re in the pool in the mornings, you can hear their laughter and chatter all the way up to the dining rooms.”
