Polo Park Estates 100-year-old earns her doctorate degree
Known to many in the Midland, Texas, community, Dr. Helen Stewart Estes, 100, recently earned an honorary doctorate degree from Sul Ross University. The milestone achievement was awarded to Helen for her accomplishments as a centenarian and her significant work as a lifetime educator in Texas.
A 1940 graduate of the university, Helen spent more than 60 years shaping the futures and minds of children in Midland through public education. The impact she had on these individuals was obvious with many of them attending her achievement celebration and sharing memorable stories when she was their teacher.
“I loved everything I ever taught,” said Helen. Although, she admits teaching junior high school math was her favorite.
Helen, a beloved resident at Polo Park Estates, celebrated this momentous achievement with fellow residents, former colleagues and students, and the deputy superintendent of the Midland Independent School District.
“Seeing Helen’s former students and colleagues in attendance was a testament to all the lives she touched in Midland over the years. She deserved to be celebrated,” said Robert Williams, sales leader for Holiday Retirement.
Nominated earlier this year, Helen is the first person to receive an honorary doctorate degree from Sul Ross University.
