Point Defiance Village resident brightens community with hand-painted benches
Ed Arnold, a 75-year-old Tacoma resident, was on a leisurely walk around Point Defiance Village, the senior living community he has called home since March 2015, when he noticed some of the benches on the property looked a little worn out. So Ed decided to turn the benches into works of art.
Ed picked up his painting hobby to take his mind off the pain from multiple back surgeries. Ed painted the first Point Defiance Village bench in support of his favorite football team, the Seattle Seahawks. The senior living community’s delighted response encouraged him to continue, and he has now revamped five of the 10 benches scattered throughout Point Defiance Village’s 28+ acres of outdoor space. “Ed’s benches have added so much warmth and personality to Point Defiance Village,” said Vanessa Gutierrez, enrichment coordinator at the senior living community. “Residents can’t help but smile when they walk by the works of art, and it’s created a lot of friendly competition among fans of different teams.”
Recently, Jenna Hanchard of KING-TV came out to Point Defiance Village to talk to Ed about painting the senior living community’s benches. Ed’s says, “It’s the laughter that makes the benches worth it. I like to make everyone happy and bring a smile to their face.”
