Redwood Retirement Residence’s eldest celebrates her 104th birthday surrounded by friends and family
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, on December 15, 1910, Grace Dizmang celebrated her 104th birthday among friends and family in Napa, California, on December 15, 2014. As the eldest individual to call Redwood Retirement Residence home, her fellow residents all agree they are lucky to know her.
Famous for her angel food cakes made from scratch that always made an appearance at family birthday celebrations, Grace was honored with not only a birthday lunch with balloons, flowers, and cake, but also with a birthday dinner with her two sons, family friends, and fellow residents.
“Grace was tickled pink to learn how our independent senior living community was planning to celebrate her birthday,” said Sonya Buchanan, community manager at Redwood Retirement Residence.
Grace and her now late husband, Russell, made the move to Napa when Russell’s asthma had worsened and the California climate served him better. They both worked at the Napa Valley Register, Grace as a linotype operator and Russell as a linotype technician. Grace retired after 25 years and since living at Redwood Retirement Residence, she enjoys playing Bean Bag Baseball and seeing the hot air balloons.
In a recent survey of Holiday Retirement centenarians, Grace was asked what her secret to longevity is. Her response: the appreciation of her two sons. Grace and her late husband had two sons, Daryl and Larry, both of whom graduated from UC Berkeley and became doctors in the Napa area. Her philosophy certainly has helped take her into triple digits as well. Grace believes that you should “put out as much love as you can and always do the things you feel are right.”
Happy birthday, Grace! Hope you have a wonderful year.
