Polo Park Estates resident crosses “ride a camel” off her bucket list
Every New Year’s Eve, residents at Polo Park Estates get together to share their resolutions for the coming year. Answers like, “eat healthier,” or “be more active,” are certainly common, but for one spunky resident, each new year is all about crossing another item off of her bucket list.
Already someone who has quite the array of bucket list activities under her belt, Helen Estes, 101, set her sights on riding a camel for 2016, “well, I have always wanted to ride a camel, ever since I was a little girl,” she said wistfully. And thanks to a friend of the community’s chef, Helen got her wish and crossed “ride a camel” of her bucket list just a few weeks ago.
Doug Baum with Texas Camel Corps from outside of Waco, Texas, agreed to provide Helen a camel in which to ride, as long as her family agreed it was OK. Well, after Helen opted to ride into her 97th birthday party on the back of a motorcycle, her family figured she could handle a camel ride—much to Helen’s delight.
Fellow Polo Park Estates residents, community team members, and Midland residents joined in the festivities to cheer Helen on as she waved and grinned from atop the camel. Inspired by Helen’s hunger for adventure and exploring new things, Polo Park Estates has started the Bucket List Campaign where residents are encouraged to submit items from their bucket lists and the senior living community will see what it can do to cross these items off the lists.
