Harvard Park resident celebrates 102nd birthday with Mayor Condon and his wife
November 16, 2014, marked Jeunette Nelson’s 102nd birthday and according to her, “this has been the best one I’ve had.” The Harvard Park resident celebrated the occasion with visits from her family and a few of Spokane’s dignitaries.
Mayor David Condon and his wife, Kristin, were on hand to congratulate Jeunette and to celebrate the milestone. Surrounded by loved ones, including some of her 19 grandchildren, Jeunette enjoyed a celebratory lunch with the mayor and his wife, during which they talked about her family and keys to a long life.
Although Jeunette is a Minnesota native, she considers Harvard Park and the Spokane area her home. After all, she has been a Spokanite for more than 50 years. Over the years, Jeunette has been blessed with two wonderful marriages and plenty of grandchildren to love. When asked by Mayor Condon how she met her husband, her youthful vigor shone through as her cheeks quickly turned rosy. The question warranted a calculated response from Jeunette: “he had a roving eye.”
As far as living to 102, Jeunette insists the secret is living a clean life. She credits her longevity to staying away from drinking, smoking, and gambling. However, some temptations are simply too hard to resist. Blowing out the candle on top of a banana split with all the fixings, Jeunette has more than earned herself a few indulgences.
