Golf: a healthy sport for any age, Vivian shows us how
Creativity, adventure and an active lifestyle are important even as you age. Entering the golden years and beyond, seniors at Holiday Retirement communities have consistently proven that retirement is not a static experience, but one in which they can continue to enrich themselves in various ways.
One of the best activities for staying healthy as you age is golf. Golf has numerous health benefits, such as improved cardiovascular health and reduced risk of dementia; it’s a year-round sport in most states; and it offers the perfect opportunity to remain connected and social.
Those are some of the reasons Vivian Czarnecki, from Holiday Retirement's Point Defiance Village in Tacoma, Washington, took up golf. For years, Vivian played golf alongside her husband at Joint Base Lewis–McChord military installation and even secured a hole-in-one record on the course! She is also a former member of the Tacoma Women’s Golf Association, which allowed her to explore a new Tacoma golf course each month.
The best part? Vivian did all of this after she was 60 years old!
In addition to being a great pastime for Vivian, golfing has also left her with priceless memories, even when she wasn’t playing herself.
“When my husband was in golf tournaments, I loved to hunt for golf balls around the course. One time, I found 50 in one day,” said Vivian. “One of my other favorite stories is when someone accidentally hit their ball at the same time as mine and our balls collided up in the air.”
Now, Vivian has exchanged her physical course for a digital one. You can catch her in the media room in the retirement community every Monday night playing Wii Sports golf and giving all the other residents a run for their money.
Thinking about picking up golf? Or perhaps wondering if it’s time to get back in the game after giving it up a few years back? Then this is the month to make your move. June is Women’s Golf Month, and golf facilities across the country are offering women golfers special offers on clinics, lessons and other activities.
